Rising star Lola Young on music, custard creams and how much she loves Frank Ocean

This is A HOT MINUTE WITH, a quick-fire interview series championing all the rising talent catapulting into fashion, art and music’s fickle stratosphere. From pinch-me moments to bad dates and even worse chat-up lines, think of it as an overindulgent conversation – like the ones you have in sticky club toilets at 4.A.M. Except these guests don’t regret the overshare…

NAME LOLA YOUNG
AGE 20
LOCATION London, England
STAR SIGN Capricorn

Phoebe Shardlow: How would you describe your sound?

Lola Young: It’s a melting pot of different cultures - there’s neo soul and R&B. It’s a bit singer/songwriter and my latest body of work definitely leans more into that. I’m super excited to drop it!

PS: If you could collaborate with anyone who would it be?

LY: Frank Ocean. He’s my favourite artist ever but also ANDERSON .PAAK, SZA and SUMMER WALKER

PS: Channel Orange or Blonde

LY: Channel Orange

PS: How do you want people to feel when they listen to your music?

LY: I think to experience a whirlwind of different emotions. I want people to feel good, but also feel like they can cry to my music. I want people to feel something, if anything at all.

PS: What’s something you’ve done that you’re proud of?

LY: Releasing my music and getting it out there into the world. Also getting signed to a record label - that was a huge achievement for me.

PS: If you could share an Uber Pool with anyone, who?

LY: I really love LAKEITH STANFIELD - he’s super hot and seems like the most down-to-earth guy.

PS: Custard Creams or Bourbons?

LY: Custard Creams, I can’t stand Bourbons.

PS: Go to drink at the pub?

LY: Pina Colada or a dark rum and coke.

PS: How do you take your tea?

LY: Milk, no sugar.

PS: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given as a musician?

LY: It actually came from my lawyer, he told me to always look at things as though you’re going to make it. To look at things as though you’re going to become the person you want to be, like I’m going to do bigger and better than before.

PS: Who’s your dream dinner party guest and what would you cook for them?

LY: Oh my god, I can’t cook so it would be ramen noodles. I would invite Frank Ocean, I don’t give a f*ck! I want to be him so of course he’s getting invited over.

PS: As a non-chef then, what’s your go to takeaway?

LY: Thai - always a green curry.

PS: If you could only wear one designer brand for the rest of your life what would it be?

LY: GUCCI

PS: Who’s playing you in the movie adaptation of your life?

LY: Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
