Doge, Bennifer, Kardashian PDA, Sawayama, Barbz... Could this week have been anymore iconic?

This is WHAT THE F*CK!, your weekly pop culture round-up of nail-biting news, need-to-know trends and never-to-be-ignored topics. Think of it as your own personally curated list, prepped and preened with things that deserve your undivided attention or disapproving glances. Allow us to do the hard work for you (we’re your own little tattle-tale) and let us show you what to check-out and check-off this week.

DOGE DAYS ARE OVER!
Cryptocurrency 101

The Dogecoin, a type of digital currency that I still can’t quite wrap my head around, started off as a joke. Kind of like when I was 17 and declared things ‘lit’ ironically, but did it so much that it entered my vernacular full time. Named after that very popular 2013 meme of a Shiba Inu dog, the Dogecoin was much the same, but after being backed by GRIMES’ baby daddy (who you may know as Elon Musk) its value soared. The wee dog even crashed stock markets earlier this month. However after a decidedly unfunny and awkward Saturday Night Live appearance from Musk, the doge is toast. AZEALIA BANKS was demanding all week that the terrifying billionaire lizard man “PUMPS THE DOGE”... but alas, doge is dead.

THE GREAT BENNIFER REDUX
Are BEN AFFLECK and JENNIFER LOPEZ back together again?

It’s 2021, anything can happen right? This week, Jenny from the block and Batman were spotted together 17 YEARS AFTER their 2004 split, together in Montana - you know, just hanging out as former power couples of the early noughties do. The Guardian were quick to hail them the “21st Century’s very own Liz Taylor and Richard Burton.” One question on my mind however is did Affleck keep hold of the Harry Winston pink diamond engagement ring worth $2.5 million and will we be seeing it again very soon?

HORNY JAIL
Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker, please stop

KOURTNEY KARDASHIAN and TRAVIS BARKER (from BLINK-182, not my realm at all) are the unusual celebrity coupling nobody asked for. Normally I’m all for bizarre celebrity couples, PETE DAVIDSON and ARIANA GRANDE’S paparazzi shots were like catnip to me… but KK and Mister Baker’s displays of PDA feels a bit too sickly. Shots of the couple getting off anywhere and everywhere flood my timeline constantly. They have an energy evocative of the emo couple in school that would do hand stuff behind the curtain of the drama classroom. But whatever, hats off to them getting theirs and who knows - maybe they’ll pop out some kind of pop punk Kardashian heir.

PURPLE REIGN
Rina Sawayama wows at the Brit Awards

Singer RINA SAWAYAMA embodied the spirit of her song XS at the BRIT AWARDS earlier this week wearing an archive Balmain couture gown styled by JORDAN KELSEY. The garment - from OLIVIER ROUSTEING’S debut 2019 couture collection, is a cacophony of voluminous lilac tulle, cascading onto the Brits’ red carpet. A look suitable only for the next princess of pop - and to top it all off the singer wore BULGARI jewels and JIMMY CHOO heels, bellissimo Rina!

CALLING ALL BARBZ
Nicki Minaj drops Beam Me Up Scotty (again)

The Barbz’ insatiable appetite was fed yesterday as NICKI MINAJ made her 2009 mixtape, Beam Me Up Scotty, available on streaming services for the first time ever. But fear not, there’s some fresh produce in Onika’s offering with new tracks including Seeing Green featuring LIL WAYNE and Drake. Yep! The YMCMB gang are back together again so grab your snapbacks and stream Nicki, like NOW. Oop and a new Nicki album is in the works FYI!!!
