Meet our new favourite bass player, Blu DeTiger, part of Fender’s Next Class of 2021
This is A HOT MINUTE WITH, a quick-fire interview series championing all the rising talent catapulting into fashion, art and music’s fickle stratosphere. From pinch-me moments to bad dates and even worse chat-up lines, think of it as an overindulgent conversation – like the ones you have in sticky club toilets at 4.A.M. Except these guests don’t regret the overshare…
NAME BLU DETIGER
AGE 23
LOCATION L.A. (just for now!), normally NYC.
STAR SIGN Pisces (Aquarius cusp).
Phoebe Shardlow: You’re in L.A at the moment but you’re originally from New York, which do you prefer?
Blu DeTiger: I’m like super New York so I definitely prefer it but I enjoy coming to L.A. from time to time just to get inspired by the differences.
PS: How would you describe your sound?
BDT: I came up with this phrase the other day that I thought was cool; indie-pop, with some funk groove and New York City edge!
PS: Okay, let’s say there’s suddenly an alien invasion and they wanted tickets to a show of yours, how would you describe a Blu DeTiger performance?
BDT: It’s going to be a lot of bass guitar, a lot of groove and a lot of rocking out. There’s real instruments and a good energy - it’s a fun time.
PS: Who are your favourite bass players?
BDT: Bernard Edwards, Marcus Miller, Larry Graham, James Jamerson and Meshell Ndegeocello are my top peeps.
PS: What’s a favourite song of yours?
BDT: I feel like it changes everyday but right now I really like Night Shade and Toast with the Butter.
PS: You played CBGBs which is SO COOL! What was that like?
BDT: I mean it’s such an iconic venue and I played there super young. It was through a programme where you would learn a bunch of songs with different artists every season then you’d do a tribute show to them. I have some really cute photos and videos. It’s such a cool, legendary spot and I was so lucky to play there before it closed down.
PS: What’s a musical achievement you’re really proud of?
BDT: So much has happened in this last year it’s hard to pick just one but announcing my first headline tour was really special. Also putting my EP out.
PS: Do you remember when you first picked up a bass guitar?
BDT: I remember being seven, picking one up and it being way taller than me - it was huge.
PS: What’s your favourite month of the year?
BDT: I feel like February which is a stupid answer because that’s when my birthday is.
PS: Diet Coke or regular?
BDT: Regular, it hits differently.
PS: Did you always want to be a musician?
BDT: Absolutely, I never thought about doing anything else. If I wasn’t doing music maybe I’d be doing art of some sort like painting or ceramics.
PS: Who’s your dream dinner party guest?
BDT: David Bowie or Prince, I’d just get into it and be like ‘what’s up?’.
PS: People always have the craziest stories about Prince!
BDT: Exactly! I feel like anything that came out of his mouth is woah. People like that are so captivating and such anomalies. There can only be one Prince or David Bowie.
PS: Favourite Bowie song?
BDT: Heroes is one of my favourite songs of all time, also Fame, Golden Years and Ashes to Ashes.
PS: So you love ‘80s Bowie then?
BDT: I think so yes! All the dancey ones.
PS: If you could be anyone for the day who would it be?
BDT: Maybe BEYONCÉ or RIHANNA just to see what’s going on. I’d listen to all the music that’s coming out before everyone else does.
